“Funny” story. Prior to my last stroke in 2007, I avoided hot spices like even jalapeno peppers, which my friends from Oklahoma said I was a wimp. After all, jalapenos are NOT hot, they insisted. But I always enjoyed sushi, sans wasabi. Then about April after the stroke, I accidentally ate a piece of sushi that had been “contaminated” with the adjacent wasabi. But rather than reacting in terror, “Save my mouth from burning!!”, it struck me as kind of pleasant. Since then, I eat the hottest kimchi and chili peppers with delight!!! Apparently the stroke altered some track in my brain, and now “it thinks” hot spices are nice. :-)))
